Quilt Top:

As you sew, backstitch any seams that are on the outer edges so they won’t come loose.

Trim any loose threads on the back of the quilt top so they won’t show through after the quilting is done.

If  your quilt has bias pieces on the outer edges, please stitch ¼ -inch around the perimeter to

     prevent stretching.

Check that the top is square and straight.

Also, watch for flared borders as puckers or tucks may occur in the quilting process.

If your quilt was a definite direction to it or you want one edge to definitely be the top, pin a

     note to that edge.

Press the top and watch the directions the seams are pressed, especially if ditch-type quilting is to be done.

Do not add embellishments such as buttons, beads, ribbon  to the quilt top prior to the quilting

process as they may get in the way of the needle.  I can work around most appliqués and

     special folds.

The flatter the top is from the start, the better the quilting job will be!

I can provide hints and techniques on adding, borders, sashing,  and other special techniques so

     please ask.

Quilt Backing:

100% cotton fabric is best, or a fabric to match those used in the top.

I have several wide backing fabrics as a reasonable price (and will save you from piecing your quilt backs).
Contact me for colors and options.

Decide if you want to pre-wash the fabric.

If seams are necessary to get the back large enough, trim the selvage edge from the seams and

press them open.  It is easier to do this is the seams are sewn at ½ inch.

Also, watch the grainline of the fabrics.  The grainlines of any pieces sewn together should

match or there could be distortion in the quilting process.

Size for backing:  the backing must be 4 to 6 inches larger for a small project and up to 10 or

12 inches larger for a large sized quilt.  This allows space for the pinning process and for the

     layering that takes place.

Since I need a true straight edge to pin to the canvas, the backing must be square and straight

     around all edges.

I can pre-wash, add seams, press, or square up the backing for a small fee.

Batting:

Pre-wash if you choose; carefully read about shrinkage on the package label

Batting also needs to be 4 to 6 inches larger for a small quilt and up to 10 or 12 inches larger

for a large sized quilt.  This allows space for the pinning process and for the layering that takes place.
The thicker battings need extra inches for the rolling process.

Remember to purchase batting recommended for longarm quilting so some are too thin or not

     bonded

Also, think about the purpose of the quilt when choosing the batting.  Will it be on

a child’s bed?  Will it hang on the wall?  Some battings stretch more than others, some shrink

more, and some are more durable.

If you have questions on batting, call or send me an e-mail message

I stock many excellent battings - at extremely reasonable prices (and by the inch, so you need to purchase only what
you need).  Click here to see my available batting options.
